Reading
At Beech Hill, we place huge importance on the value of enjoying reading and creating an early positive reading habit and culture. Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success. You can support your child by following six simple steps:
1. Read to your child regularly.
2. Have books at home/school which are readily available.
3. Give your child choice in what they would like to read.
4. Provide help in selecting a book which will engage your child.
5. Make time for reading – every day, ideally!
6. Make reading fun!
Libraries and book shops have a huge selection of books available which can make it hard for children to make a choice. Why not use the following link, https://www.worldbookday.com/reading-recommendations/ which will take you to the World Book Day website, to help you to identify books that your children will enjoy. The website has numerous authors who recommend books (both their own and those of other authors) and share videos to share their favourite books and give some insight into what the books are about. The books recommended are classified as either ‘early, fluent or independent’ readers.
Some children are reluctant to read. The Book Trust, whose motto is ‘Getting Children Reading’ have a list of recommended books for children who are reluctant readers. In addition, they recommend title for children who are dyslexic.
If you are keen to read with your child, but feel that you’d like some guidance as to how to make reading really engaging, try watching the Book Trust’s video which provides useful, supportive guidance: The magic of sharing stories at home (youtube.com)
