PE Curriculum Statement
At Beech Hill, we believe in fostering a lifelong love of physical activity and sport. Our comprehensive PE curriculum, from Reception to Year 6, aims to develop fundamental movement skills, promote teamwork, and encourage participation in a wide range of activities.
Early Years Foundation Stage (Nursery)
Planned opportunities for play, both indoors and outdoors, are used to support children to develop their core strength, stability, balance, spatial awareness, co-ordination and agility. Gross-motor skills provision also provides the foundation for developing healthy bodies and social and emotional well-being.
Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception):
- Focus on developing fundamental movement skills through play-based activities.
- Introduction to basic ball skills, coordination, and spatial awareness.
- Encouraging participation and enjoyment in physical activity.
Key Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2):
- Building upon fundamental movement skills with structured PE lessons.
- Introduction to gymnastics, ball skills, and athletics.
- Emphasis on developing teamwork and cooperation.
Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6):
- A balanced curriculum offering one PE lesson and one games session per week.
PE Lessons:
- Continued development of gymnastics, circuit training and OAA.
- Introduction to swimming for year 4 & year 5 pupils.
Games Sessions:
- Opportunities to participate in a variety of team sports, fostering tactical awareness and skills development.
- Increased opportunities to represent the school in fixtures and tournaments.
"Sport for All" and Cross-curricular Activities:
- We offer a wide range of cross-curricular clubs to cater to all abilities and interests.
- Our philosophy emphasises participation in diverse sports to develop a broad range of skills, promoting a holistic understanding of teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship.
- Clubs include, but are not limited to, dance, athletics, and various team sports.
- We will aim to provide a wide variety of sporting clubs, and will adapt the clubs provided based on pupil interest.
Competitive Opportunities and Events:
- Pupils participate in intra-school competitions and sports days.
- Opportunities are also provided to represent the school at inter-school, county and regional tournaments.
